Day One — HURRICANE RIDGE

During your drive into Sequim, the Olympic Mountains provided a beautiful backdrop. Now, it is time to enjoy a view from the top.

Start your day by driving west along U.S. Highway 101 to nearby Port Angeles. Hurricane Ridge is located about 19 miles from Port Angeles and is considered the crown jewel of Olympic National Park. Sip a cup of coffee or enjoy an ice cream cone at the rustic day lodge overlooking the glacier-clad peaks of the Olympic Mountains. Or walk along one of the many trails to enjoy panoramic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and alpine meadows. Trails range from easy to difficult, making it possible for everyone to enjoy the area’s beauty. Sunrises and sunsets are particularly beautiful at the Ridge. During the winter, snowshoeing, skiing and tubing opportunities are available.

Even if it is sunny and clear in Sequim, be sure to call the Olympic National Park Visitor Center to check weather conditions above the clouds. Driving time, starting at the Sequim Visitor Center, is about 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the 5,200-foot elevation Hurricane Ridge rests at. Please note: Hurricane Ridge Road is sometimes closed in winter due to heavy snow or to allow for snow removal. For more information: www.nps.gov/olym.
